Simple, Smart and Reliable

Casambi uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to create a smart mesh network where every lighting node can communicate with its neighbors.
That means no central gateway is needed – just power up the module, and it starts talking.

How it works

Each IoT module connects to others in the area to form a resilient mesh. Messages find their way from node to node, even around corners or through walls. You don’t need a clear line of sight – but you do need to consider the environment:

• Materials matter: Wood and plastic have low signal loss, while metal (like steel housings or aluminium reflectors) can significantly reduce range.
• Noise matters: WiFi, microwave ovens, and other Bluetooth devices also share the 2.4 GHz band. The system is built to be robust, but heavy interference can still limit performance.

Expected range

Modules with internal antennas typically reach up to 10 meters in normal conditions (open air, no metal enclosures). If you’re working with metal parts or need longer distances, choose the external antenna version instead.

Need even more range? Our modules support Long Range Mode, configurable in the Casambi app. It extends the reach – but comes with a trade-off: slower data rates and fewer devices per network.

Choosing the right version

To make sure your setup performs as expected:

• Internal antenna:
  ✓ Use in open spaces or when mounted in plastic
  ✓ Works well for standard downlights, panels and decorative luminaires
• External antenna:
  ✓ Recommended when installing inside or near metal
  ✓ Ideal for outdoor fixtures, bulkheads or industrial fittings

Installation tips

• Internal antenna modules:
  Avoid metal contact around the antenna area
  Mount securely on the light engine and test that signal reaches at least one neighboring node
• External antenna modules:
  Choose cable length to match placement
  Mount antenna through plastic or drill a hole in metal for optimal exposure
  Always verify signal strength in all directions

💡 Note: While the system is designed to be robust, signal range can vary depending on installation conditions. Always validate performance on site – especially for challenging environments.
