How to integrate DimIn Casambi into your luminaire

Background

As a supplier of LED modules, we take responsibility for providing accurate and verifiable information about our products. However, it is important to understand that many of the required parameters are influenced by how the module is integrated into the final luminaire. Therefore, close cooperation between module and luminaire manufacturers is essential to ensure that the end product meets both technical and regulatory requirements.

The intention from all sides is to create simplicity, as the control system is fully integrated into the luminaires. This means no extras just luminaires, sensors, and switches. As a result, specification, installation, configuration, and use become straightforward.

DimIn Casambi – explained simply

DimIn Casambi is a compact Bluetooth module that makes your luminaire wirelessly controllable – with no control wiring required. It uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and automatically connects to a local Casambi network when powered. No external controller or gateway is needed.

The system is based on Casambi’s proven mesh technology, widely used in professional environments such as hotels, offices, libraries, restaurants, and gyms.

What makes Casambi unique?

  • Every unit is both a transmitter and a receiver – the signal can hop between luminaires
  • Works without internet connection or WiFi
  • Simple control via app or push buttons
  • Dimming, scenes, and schedules without a central controller

What do I need to know?

  • When the Bluetooth module is mounted in the LED module, it receives power and connects to nearby Casambi devices.
  • Mesh networks are created automatically between luminaires.
  • You can easily control it via the Casambi App.

What affects the range?

How far does the signal reach?

  • With internal antenna in a plastic housing, signal typically reaches 10–30m.
  • In luminaires with heavy metal construction, range can decrease to 4–6 m.
  • To increase range, you can use:
  • External antenna (mounted outside the metal enclosure)
  • Casambi Long Range Mode – for distances up to several hundred meters with external antenna (at slightly slower communication speed)
  • Keep in mind that Casambi operates as a mesh network, where all signals “hop” to the nearest device. This means that effective range depends more on the physical layout of the installation than on point-to-point distance.

Signal Strength and Range Testing

It is the responsibility of the luminaire manufacturer to ensure the final signal strength and performance of the luminaire within the network. To guarantee reliable operation, range tests must be carried out and documented during product validation. These tests shall always be performed node-to-node (between luminaires in the mesh network).

Note: Phone-to-node tests are not valid, since the mobile device always connects to the strongest available node and therefore does not reflect the actual behavior of the mesh network.

Installation tips

Internal antenna

  • Avoid blocking the antenna part with metal housing
  • Mount the Bluetooth module correctly on the LED module
  • Test that the signal reaches the next luminaire node (or Casambi gateway if used)

External antenna

  • Route the antenna cable through plastic housing or an opening in the metal
  • Mount the antenna visible or with free path outside the luminaire
  • Test signal strength in all directions – especially in concrete or industrial environments

 

Important considerations

Although Casambi is very robust, range varies depending on luminaire design. Always test performance in the intended environment. We are happy to assist if adaptation is needed.
